Basically, organic food is food that is produced without the use of artificial pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified organisms (GMO's). Organic food is almost like a band now. Instead of people referring to the type of conditions that the food has grown in, the term is associated with certified organic foods that are produced and labelled according to strict standard regulations.
Facts and Statistics
People are beginning to realise that organic food is the best choice. The organic food market is growing much faster than the rest of the food industry, despite the fact that organic food only accounts for 12% of total food sales worldwide. Since the early 1990's the world organic market has been growing by 20% a year. The future trend is expected to carry on at 10-50% annually depending on the country. In 2002, the world organic food sales were US $23 billion.
These days it is possible to purchase organic food products in 73 percent of conventional grocery stores and almost 20,000 natural food stores.
