The modern piano players - The piano is an instrument that has truly stood the test of time. It is perhaps the most versatile instrument ever created making its presence felt in a myriad of different musical styles. In fact it is fair to say that without the piano certain genres of music would never have been born or had they still been born they would not have evolved into what they are today.
Jazz for example relies heavily on the piano. The instrument lends itself well to improvisation which is at the root of true live jazz music. Dave Bruebeck and Thelonius Monk both made their marks in the jazz history book through great piano playing. Countless others, too many to mention made their mark in jazz with their own distinctive style of piano playing.
During the 1950's and 60's the evolution of rock and roll owed much to the piano.
Initially those of traditional piano playing backgrounds looked with scorn upon the way in which their beloved instrument was being 'mistreated'. On both sides of the channel however the genre was acquiring a steady following and those who previously suggested that it would never catch on were forced to eat their words.
Modern popular music is no exception when it comes to a love affair with the ivory keys. Stars such as Elton John and Billy Joel have made the instrument an integral part of their musical style pushing further still the possibilities of something that was created nearly 300 years ago.
